– Is a lovely city to visit, on the River Isle, it’s the prefecture of Dordogne, with history going back to 200 BC.

Not just a city of art and history, the river is popular for canoeing, or simply enjoying a picnic on the banks of the river. 

Try and make time to explore the medieval / renaissance / roman remains, enjoy a patisserie at a local café, visit the artisan shops or take in the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre and the Vesone Tower.  There are several public gardens and parks in the city

A must do is visit the Byzantine St-Front Cathedral (the model for the Sacré Coeur Basilica in Montmartre) also the largest church in Aquitane and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The cathedral is included in the World Heritage Sites of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.

The Gallo Roman Vesunna Museum contains the remains of a Roman residence and a collection of roman artefacts

The Perigord Museum of Art and Archaeology has pre-historic and roman items.

The Military Museum, has a collection of militaria from the Hundred Years War through to the resistance in WWII

The Trompe l'oeil Museum and Workshop tells the history of trompe l'oeil.


In the summer the tourist office run tours of Roman or Medieval and Renaissance Perigueux, you can also do a bike tour of the gardens and Monday nights there are tours by torch-light of the city.
